Description
If you kayak in or near Discovery Bay in Washington State, you might run across the tufted puffin. It's distinctive masked face and golden plume make it a stunning bird. It's a member of the auk family, along with rhinoceros auks (unicorn puffins), which you might also see in the salty Pacific waters, along with seals, otters, and sea lions. This image is a painterly manipulation of an original photograph.
The tufted puffin is a prolific fish-eater and can hold multiple fish in its bill, especially if it has chicks to feed. It can even consume its fish while under water.
