Description
This is a painterly photo of an outdoor church on a riverbank of the historic Jerusalem Lutheran Church propery near Effingham, Georgia. This was an original pre-Revolutionary settlement of protestants who were expelled, or at risk of being expelled, from Salzburg and Germany.
The town was established in 1734 by about 150 Salzburger and a few German emigrants, Protestant refugees who had been expelled from the Catholic Archbishopric of Salzburg (in present-day Austria) in the 1730s. With the consent of governor James Oglethorpe, New Ebenezer was moved closer to the Savannah River in 1736, and at its new location many silk mills were opened, but later closed after occupation during the American Revolution.
The original Ebenezer town site and Jerusalem Lutheran Church were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The New Ebenezer Camp, established 1977, is located in former Ebenezer. In 1987, the LAMAR Institute began an archaeological study of Ebenezer.
When I visited this amazing historic site, I saw the outdoor church down by Ebenezer Creek, which I believe flows into the Savannah River. Beautiful afternoon light poured through the Spanish moss, and created a beautiful backdrop for the cross.
