Description
Before Thomas Spalding acquired much of the island in 1802, Sapelo had been home to Spanish missionaries, and French and English settlers. The original brick lighthouse and oil house were restored in 1998. A spiral staircase enables visitors to see Doboy Sound.
The lighthouse was dark for many years but now exhibits a light once again.
This community preserves the Gullah culture, a rich mixture of African, European, and Native American customs, although the population has been dwindling in recent years. In 2011, archeologists unearthed the remains of the original lightkeepers house. This artwork is based on an original photograph but has effects and patina applied to make it look like vintage folk art.
