Description
At least half of my photos of this golden eye duck hen are of nothing but splattered droplets, as she dove and dove for her evening's dinner a split second before I clicked the photo. She's amazing to watch as she arcs up, dives down, and then swims gracefully underwater. I think I caught her rising up slightly, getting ready to dive. She kept swimming just beyond a good lens length (for me), especially as the light was waning, but she finally came closer to shore.
The female has a burgundy-brown head with bright golden eyes, befitting for her name. . These unusually shaped ducks, with very large heads, dive for their food, which is mostly aquatic invertebrates and fish. They have facinating bluish black and gray tail feathers in an interesting fan shape. They tend to be coastal but will migrate inland late in the fall. I'm glad I finally got a few shots of her after missing her - she splashes really fast, and you have to assess where she's swimming to get a photo after she emerges.
