Description
This lone tree on the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation - between Brunswick and Darien, Georgia - caught my eye as I explored the grounds.I tried to frame it under the branch of the live oak with Spanish moss in the waning late afternoon sun.
As I was editing the photo, I was trying a few different filters to adjust the contrast, saturation, etc. Then, I stumbled across this more aggressive filter that brought out different aspects of the photo entirely. It reminds me, though, of the magical feeling of solitude in the marsh as dusk approaches. The lights are imaginary but they make me think of a concept called marsh lights or possibly even lightning bugs gone wild.
Marsh lights, sometimes called swamp lights, spook lights, bog lights, or will-o'-the-wisp,. often appear in folklore as lanterns held by ghosts to light a traveler's passage, whether it's for protection or for evil. Scientists describe them as a natural phenomenon, such as bioluminescence or chemiluminescence from the presence and decay of marsh grasses and other ogranic matter.
These "lights" are imaginary, and much more prolific than the folktales, but they reminded me of the phenomena and provided an interesting feeling to the image. I hope you'll enjoy it in your home, and I thank you.
